Salt
after the ferry
The sea gives nothing back
that it was not first given.
We stood at the rail
counting the white birds
as if the number mattered,
as if anything counted.
Salt on the window.
Salt in the seam of the door.
The whole boat breathing
a mineral sigh.
By landfall the water
had forgotten our names
and we had let it.
