Small Hours
At three the city
turns over in its sleep
and shows us
the underside of everything.
A fridge in an empty flat.
A bus that will not come.
One lit window
holding its small warm argument.
I have been awake
long enough to know
that the dark is not empty —
only unobserved.
Morning will come
the way it always does:
without asking,
without apology.
